Jesus Was Right About Today’s Trump-Supporting Evangelicals

Author’s Disclaimer: By citing Luke 16 to make my point about our current American president, it’s possible to infer the idea that anyone who voted for President Trump or currently supports him is bound for eternal damnation in hell. That’s not what I’m saying here. (Some of them might end up that way, but it’s not my business to make that determination.)

By now you’ve no doubt heard about Christianity Today’s editorial calling for the president’s removal, and about all the pushback from evangelical leaders saying, essentially, nuh-uh. (It happens like clockwork.)

There’s a delicious kind of irony at play that this controversy is playing out during the Advent season, in the run-up to Christmas. This year I’ve been re-acquainting myself with several different cinematic productions of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol — first the 1970s-era Albert Finney version, then the 90s Muppet version… Bill Murray and Carol Kane are on deck.

In watching them, I’ve become acutely aware of the extent to which 45’s supporters are essentially defending the early story version of Ebenezer Scrooge, not because the president is rich and miserly…
