I made this story up, but it doesn’t matter. The issues are different but the problem is the same.

Okay folks.

You wanna make the world of social media a better place? Here’s one thing you can do today that can help bridge the cultural divide:

Stop sharing memes about news stories that “nobody is talking about,” or that “the media wants to ignore.”

You know the kind of meme I’m talking about. I’ve seen conservatives do this, and I’ve seen liberals do it. I’ve seen it said about things that are conspiracy theories that rightfully should never see the light of day, and I’ve seen it said about stories that are clearly are a part of the news cycle. Either way, these memes tend to degrade the quality of public discourse surrounding news and the way it is disseminated, for several reasons:

Reason #1: There is No “The Media.”

If we’re in the middle of the complete trainwreck/dumpster fire that is The Year of Our Lord 2020, and you still have yet to realize that there is no conspiratory cabal of people who control all of the news coverage of every website, blog, YouTube channel, print magazine or newspaper, broadcast news team or prominent social media account… I don’t know how you can call yourself a functional adult.
