Sure, I think we can and we ought to do so. My sense is that the emphasis on systemic racism is mostly about plugging the gaps in people’s understandings. A lot of things are wrong in public discourse about racism, but one thing that most people do understand is that having a negative attitude about someone else because of their race is, generally speaking, bad and wrong. The insistence on systemic causes and reforms is probably 1.) to help people understand that intent is only part of the issue, and 2.) to help create as much positive change as possible. In 2021, I care less about the attitude of some white person who may or not have negative judgments about me based on how I look (which includes my race) than I do about that person’s ability to restrict my income by passing me over for a promotion or restricting my freedom of mobility by pulling over my vehicle without probable cause. The systemic areas might be the arenas where the most positive change can happen on a per capita basis.
